Many can’t afford high cost of dying

I want to thank The Herald and the staff of the Lynnwood Enterprise for supporting Henry Pittman’s family at his death with your Feb. 2 article, “Death Without Dignity”. The story has stirred the hearts of several readers who have called in response. I would also hope your article will support a change in our county system to help those who suffer needlessly when death occurs just because they can’t pay the high cost of dying.

I would like to make one clarification for the record. It is unlawful to hold cremated remains for payment. We at Neptune Society, and any reputable funeral establishment, would never do that. What is more likely is that services or cremation would not proceed until payment is made or there is some viable agreement in place for payment.

I would also applaud the Hospice of Snohomish County for their tenacious dedication to the dying and their families during this very stressful time.
