Seems Like Yesterday

Mr. and Mrs. Norman Newell were honored on their golden wedding anniversary at a reception and open house at the home of their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Minor Newell, 3119 25th St. Married in Kalispell, Mont., the Newells had lived in Everett since 1907.

Ed Armstrong, physical director at the YMCA, was greeted by a horde of young place winners at the conclusion of the third annual Little Olympics at the "Y" on Saturday. The big winners were Aleta Sunde, Eli Malver, Alecia Jeffs, Nancy Tremmel, Chris Preboski, Mark Schlosser, Eddie Kasey and Terry Donnelly.

The Cascade Tunnel, longest in the Western Hemisphere, was 50 years old. The dedication was broadcast on Jan. 12, 1929, over the primitive networks of the day with the principal speaker being President-elect Herbert Hoover. A former mining engineer himself, he had congratulated engineers on the 7.8-mile tunnel dug through solid granite.

Jerry L. Goos was named manager of Seattle-First National Bank’s Everett Mall branch on S. Broadway. He succeeded Charles Paulson who was recently transferred as manger of the South Everett Branch on Evergreen Way.
