Published 9:00 pm Wednesday, December 8, 2004

EVERETT – Food left on the stove likely caused a fire that destroyed a kitchen and damaged several other rooms in a house on Wednesday.

The fire was reported about 3 p.m., and firefighters arrived to find flames rolling out the back of the house in the 4700 block of Black Forest Lane, Everett battalion chief Steve Parker said.

The house was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no one was injured, Parker said. The fire displaced four residents, and the American Red Cross was providing emergency services.

Damage to the house was estimated at $80,000.

Granite Falls: Fire destroys mobile home

A chimney fire destroyed a mobile home early Wednesday, displacing a mother and her two daughters.

The fire broke out about 2:15 a.m. in the 13000 block of View Place. A smoke alarm woke the woman, who was able to get her daughter, 12, out of the house, said Bruce Pulver, Snohomish County deputy fire marshal. The woman’s older daughter was not home at the time of the fire. No one was injured.

“Thankfully, they had a working smoke detector,” Pulver said.

Residents should test their smoke detectors now that temperatures have dropped and more people are turning up the heat or using wood stoves, he added.

The damage to the mobile home was estimated at $60,000. The American Red Cross was providing emergency services to the family.

Camano Island: Police look for slaying suspect

Island County Sheriff’s deputies are stepping up their efforts to find Tamara Mattson’s killer.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Jan Smith said. Mattson’s body was discovered a year ago on Dec. 9, 2003, on a trail at Camano Island State Park.

Investigators believe she was killed elsewhere, sometime between Dec. 8 and 9, Smith said.

Mattson may have visited the Stanwood area in the weeks before her death. She had lived and worked in Snohomish and north King County. Her children are being cared for by relatives.

Mattson has used several last names, including Bergman, Chism and Flowers. She was sometimes called Tammy. She was 5 feet 4 inches tall, with a muscular build and hazel eyes.

Anyone with information about Mattson’s death or any unusual activity at the state park around the time she was found is asked to call the Island County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 360-679-9583 or Crime Stoppers at 800-274-6313.
