Stories about Hu’s visit to Boeing are starting to appear online in China this afternoon. Here’s a roundup:

People’s Daily (which seems to be running China Daily stories) reports http://english.people.com.cn/200604/21/eng20060421_260063.html that: “Hu’s charming performance and speech prompted Boeing commercial airplanes chief executive Alan Mulally, who chaired the proceedings, to pump his fist and shout ‘China rocks!’ after Hu left. ‘For the president of China’s first visit to the United States and to have the first place he stops be Paine Field and his thank you to Boeing workers — it makes my eyes water.’”

People’s Daily’s report on Hu’s speech http://english.people.com.cn/200604/21/eng20060421_260056.html emphasizes his remarks on the importance of separating business and politics.

Key Quote: “On trade frictions between China and the United States, he said: ‘We should properly address these problems through consultation and dialogue on an equal footing.’ Differences should not be politicized, he stressed.”

And Paul Dernier may just about be the most-famous American in China today, after this report. http://english.people.com.cn/200604/21/eng20060421_260055.html

Key Quote: “‘A lot of people I talked to said they’ve never seen him hug anyone,’ said Dernier … ‘So I was totally caught off guard.’”

People’s Daily also talked http://english.people.com.cn/200604/21/eng20060421_260065.html to a Chinese expert on American relations, Wang Yusheng, who said Hu’s speech here had set the stage for positive developments during his meeting with President Bush.

Key Quote: “‘President Hu has showed his sincerity in addressing the bilateral trade imbalance and his determination to take serious measures on intellectual property protection. Now we are waiting for the response from the US side,’ Wang said, pining hopes on the summit meeting.”
