Phone fundraiser rings in today
Residents of the Northshore School District can expect phone calls this week as part of the Northshore Public Education Foundation’s annual Calling for Kids Phonathon fundraiser.
Money raised will help pay for science materials, nonfiction books and teacher training, among other things.

Chaperones sought for trip
The Edmonds Sister City Commission is accepting applications from adults interested in leading the annual visit of students to Japan next summer.
Chaperones stay with a host family in Edmonds’ sister city of Hekinan. Travel costs are paid by the Sister City Commission.

Scandinavian food demo Thursday
Sons of Norway will have a demonstration featuring some of the most popular delicacies for the holidays.
There will be the new quick lefse made with instant potatoes; hardanger lefse, the nonpotato lefse; krumkake, a cone shaped cookie; rosettes, a deep fried delicate cookie; and kransekake, an 18-ring cake.
The event will start at 7 p.m. Thursday at Normanna Hall, 2725 Oakes Ave. Recipes will be available and coffee will be served. Adults, $5; kids, free.

Riverside meeting on Tuesday
The Riverside Neighborhood Association will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at North Middle School library, 2514 Rainier Ave.
Jonna Hauser with the city parks department will give an update on Garfield Park improvements. Ross Johnson with the planning department will talk about federal housing grants.
The group also plans to review association projects and go over police reports.

Lake Stevens
2007 city budget hearing tonight
The City Council will hold a public hearing on the 2007 budget proposal at 7 p.m. tonight, Lake Stevens School District Educational Service Center, 12309 22nd St. NE.
City officials are recommending a $3.7 million budget for 2007. That’s a 40 percent increase from this year’s budget.
The increase is part of the startup costs of providing services to newly annexed areas, finance director Jan Berg said.
Lynnwood
City has bike helmets available
The Lynnwood Kiwanis Club has donated bicycle helmets for the Lynnwood Police Department to distribute to children in need.
The Lynnwood Recreation Center also has bicycle helmets for sale for the discounted price of $10 each.

Budget hearing to review ‘07 dollars
The City Council will hold a public hearing on the 2007 budget proposal at 7 p.m. tonight, City Hall, 1049 State Ave.
City officials are recommending a $22.5 million budget for 2007. That’s about an 11 percent increase from this year’s budget.
The increase represents cost of living adjustments, benefit increases, and new police and public works employees needed for newly annexed areas, city administrator Mary Swenson said.
Monroe
Miracle League gets $8,000
The Monroe Miracle League, a baseball group for children with disabilities, recently received an $8,000 donation from a foundation in Omaha, Neb., called the Wiebe Foundation. The foundation supports children with special needs.
The league plans to use the money to build a ball field on a city-owned parcel near Skykomish River Park. The group has raised more than $200,000 for the $1 million project.

Hearing on budget today
The public will get a chance to comment on the city of Mukilteo’s 2007 budget today.
The meeting of the City Council will be 7 p.m. at City Hall, 4480 Chennault Beach Rd.
The council also will discuss the format of the monthly informal “chime-in” meetings.

Senior center offers massage
The Snohomish Senior Center offers massage once a month as part of its health and wellness programs at St. Michael’s Church, 1514 Pine Ave.
