Everett Rotary names scholarship for Webber
A new scholarship in honor of Bernie Webber, renowned Everett artist and Rotary Club member for 53 years, has been established by the Rotary Club of Everett.
The club is seeking applications from art students and contributions to the scholarship fund. Contributions should be made payable to the Bernie Webber Scholarship Endowment Fund at Everett Rotary, P.O. Box 1225, Everett, WA 98206. For information about the scholarship, check your high school counseling office or call the Arts Council at 425-257-8380 for information about portfolio specifications.
The scholarship is open to all Snohomish County high school seniors who plan to attend a community college, college, university or art school in the fall of 2007 in order to pursue a career in an art-related field. The first $1,000 scholarship will be awarded in May. Student portfolios will be judged by the Arts Council of Snohomish County, with the finalist chosen by the Rotary Club of Everett scholarship committee. All portfolios for consideration must be delivered by 5 p.m. Jan. 19 to the Arts Council, 1507 Wall St., Everett.
The scholarship was established to honor Webber and his many years of contributions to the community and the arts in Snohomish County. Webber was born in Everett, attended Everett High School and studied at the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles.
Webber’s murals can be found in most Everett schools, in the Snohomish County administration building, the Boeing Co., Paine Field, Naval Station Everett and many other Snohomish County buildings and locations. He has frequently donated his work to benefit charities such as the YMCA, Rotary, Campfire USA and the Boys and Girls Club.
Webber was honored as Snohomish County artist of the year and citizen of the year in 2004, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Everett Area Chamber of Commerce. Webber and his wife, Joy, have 10 children, 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Each year the Rotary Club of Everett provides about $220,000 in scholarships to students in the Everett area.
