Hold a contest to design city’s sign

According to the Jan. 15 article, “Snohomish shows signs of indecision,” the Snohomish City Council has spent over two years, several thousands of dollars, and much staff time to select a design for a welcome sign for Snohomish. The only result has been indecision and lack of consensus over the four designs submitted. What’s wrong with this picture?
Council members, here’s an idea: Schedule an open contest where anyone in Snohomish can submit their idea for a sign. Only the winner is paid. Schedule a time-frame on the entire project of no more than six months; then the council might concentrate on the more important issues facing our town.
