50 years ago (1957)
Tom Wood, Monroe State Reformatory official, discussed the operation of the Snohomish County Peace Officers Association with former President Reuben Grimstad and Secretary Barbara McDonald after Wood took over the gavel of office from Grimstad. Grimstad was police chief in Edmonds, and McDonald was secretary of the Washington State Patrol office in Everett.
Donna Madsen, a 16-year-old Silvana girl who held the title of state champion cherry pie baker, was off to Chicago to participate in the national championships. Artie Whitley of the Everett Elks presented her a check between halves of the Arlington-Everett basketball game.
25 years ago (1982)
Gov. John Spellman’s signature officially placed Everett in the 1st Congressional District taking the largest city in the 2nd District out and placing it with south Snohomish County and north King County in a Seattle-dominated district. (The battle to keep Everett in the 2nd District was far from over.)
Keith Knudson of Lynnwood, a first-year cadet at the Air Force Academy, earned a spot on the commandant’s list for military proficiency. He had also led his squadron to first place in an academy intramural swim meet by winning three first-place prizes in individual events.
