The Rotary Club of Lynnwood recently honored 68 young people in Snohomish County with Youth Challenge awards in categories including community service, courage, creativity, environmental service, inspiration and leadership.

All nominees received a certificate of recognition. Cash awards also were given to Anthony Smith, Eileen Kayyali, Karson Austin, the Lynnwood Youth Advisory Group, Katherine Kepler, Ariana Navarro, Nicole Oliphant, Steven Nguyen, Gabriella Vo, Kristin James and Benjamin Christiliaw.

County recognizes Toastmaster clubs

Celebrating the fifth anniversary of Toastmasters Club 690, Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon proclaimed May 7-13 as Toastmasters Week in Snohomish County.

Club 690 was started by Snohomish County government in 2002 for employees and other citizens. The club now includes 25 members from throughout the county.

There are more than 280 members in 17 Toastmasters clubs in Snohomish County.

Fire District 1 honors volunteers and staff

Snohomish County Fire District 1 recently gave its Steven J. Mace Award for career achievement to Capt. Shaughn Maxwell. He has been a firefighter for 18 years and a paramedic for 14 years.

The Robert Morehouse Legacy Award was presented to Bud NcCorchuk, who retired as battalion chief in January after more than 30 years of service. NcCorchuk started with Fire District 1 as a volunteer in 1974.

Matt Carlson and Matt Nelson received the Meyers-Mahoney Award presented by the Fire District 1 Volunteer Firefighters Association. Carlson and Nelson became volunteers last year and have installed more than 200 smoke alarms for citizens in Fire District 1 service area.

Fire District 1 serves about 150,000 residents in the neighborhoods of Silver Firs, Eastmont, Mariner, Lake Serene, Picnic Point, Martha Lake, Lake Stickney, Norma Beach, Hilltop, Pioneer Trails and the cities of Mountlake Terrace and Brier.

Marysville preschool kids tour fire engine

Marysville Fire Department firefighters make regular community presentations, and recently Sam Eagle and Michael Lewis visited Messiah Lutheran Preschool in Marysville to talk about fire safety.

The preschoolers, ages 4 and 5, had a close look at a fire engine and Lewis dressed in fire-fighting gear.

District 7 firefighters complete training

Firefighters Jarrod Spence, Brendan Grace, Benjamin Francis, Vincent Read, Kirk Dunham and Matthew Suhayda, all from Snohomish County Fire District 7, recently graduated from the Washington State Patrol Fire Training Academy in North Bend. Read was recognized as valedictorian and Grace was salutatorian of the class.

Fire District 7 serves about 60,000 residents in the neighborhoods of Cathcart, Clearview, Thrashers Corner, Maltby, Echo Lake, Gold Creek, The Falls, Turners Corner, North Creek and the city of Mill Creek.

Zonta Club names new officers, board

The Zonta Club of Everett has elected its officers and board of directors for 2007-2008.

The Zonta Club of Everett is a service organization working to improve the status of women.

Zumiez’s assistance rings School Bell

The Operation School Bell Award from the Assistance League of Everett was given recently to the Zumiez Foundation.

The award is given to honor those who have supported Operation School Bell, which makes sure that children from 14 school districts in Snohomish County have school clothes. During the current school year, more than 2,800 low-income students were served. In the 42 years of existence, Operation School Bell has clothed nearly 50,000 students in the county.

The Zumiez Foundation received the award for its dedicated and continued support to Assistance League of Everett. The Everett-based clothing company has given hundreds of jackets, sweatshirts, hats, gloves and fleece lap blankets to the Operation School Bell program.
