80 IDs found at man’s home

A man who allegedly cut catalytic converters from other people’s cars, stole appliances and pilfered other folks’ personal identification was charged Friday with a series of crimes, including first-degree trafficking in stolen property.
Dustin Roy Canell, 37, of Snohomish was being held on $150,000 bail pending a court appearance next week in Snohomish County Superior Court.
In addition, his girlfriend, Susan Michele Tate, 44, also of Snohomish, was charged Friday in Everett District Court with four counts of second-degree identity theft.
Snohomish County sheriff’s detectives found the personal information of more than 80 people in the home the couple shared in the 2100 block of Newberg Road, according to court documents.
Besides trafficking in stolen property, Canell was charged with first-degree theft for allegedly stealing a flatbed truck, residential burglary and second-degree identity theft.
The investigation started in early June when a man who sells catalytic converters called police, saying that Canell and another man had sold him eight converters. They were delivered in a white Isuzu flatbed truck.
The man said he was concerned the converters were stolen because they were cut from various vehicles, documents said.
When deputies happened to see the flatbed truck, they tried to stop it, but the truck drove off. Officers pursued it onto I-5, where the truck finally stopped and a man was arrested.
The man later told officers about “a string of crimes” in which Canell was involved, documents said.
Officers obtained several court-ordered search warrants for the Isuzu, a Ford van that Canell had been driving, the home on Newberg Road and some outbuildings at the residence, documents said.
Officers found numerous stolen items, including computers, a U.S. Army uniform, a Maytag washer, computer games and lots of personal information, documents said.
Deputy prosecutor Walt Sowa asked for high bail for Canell partly because of the defendant’s criminal history. Sowa said Canell has eight prior felony convictions and 20 misdemeanor convictions.
