Weekend hot spots for the holiday
Planning on a car trip over the three-day holiday weekend?
Some of the most popular destinations are the Oregon Coast and Victoria and Vancouver, B.C., according to AAA Washington. National parks, such as Yellowstone, in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho; Glacier in Montana; Crater Lake in Oregon; and Banff-Lake Louise in Alberta, Canada, also rank high.
Travelers should expect to pay more for hotels, with increases averaging 3 percent for moderately priced rooms. Airfares have remained constant, according to the survey, while car rental rates have come down an average of 3 percent from last year’s prices.
Everett homes tour needs volunteers
Volunteers are needed for the annual Historic Everett Homes Tour, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8.
Chaperones are needed to welcome guests, check tickets and possibly ask them to remove their shoes. Featured homes on this year’s tour include Henry “Scoop” Jackson’s estate.
To volunteer or for more information, call David Chrisman at 425-530-2722.
Search is on for seniors’ advocate
Adults living in nursing homes, assisted- living facilities and adult family homes throughout Snohomish County are in need of community help.
More than 2,500 residents of these facilities lack a volunteer ombudsman, who serves as an advocate, educator, investigator and problem-solver.
Volunteers receive four days of training and are asked to volunteer four hours a week. The next training session will take place Oct. 8, 9, 15 and 16. For more information, call Michal Glauner at 425-388-7393.
Time for mutts to strut their stuff
The sixth annual Mutt Strut will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Thornton A. Sullivan Park at Silver Lake in Everett.
The event includes a walk with your dog, racing competitions and a “best of” competition that includes best voice, most unusual trick and the dog and owner who look the most alike. Admission is $15 for one dog and an extra $5 for each additional dog. The event benefits the city’s off-leash areas. Call 425-257-8300 for information.
