FAIRMONT, Minn. Authorities are searching for the person who dropped a bowling ball off a bridge, crashing through a tractor-trailer windshield and injuring the driver.

Ted Maki, 54, of Missoula, Mont., was eastbound on I-90 about 150 miles southwest of Minneapolis when the ball smashed him in the face early Sunday. His rig then went through the median, crossed both westbound lanes, plowed through a fence and came to a stop in a corn field about a half mile down the road, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

No other vehicles were involved.

“This type of behavior is not a prank, it’s assault, and can be disastrous,” said Jacalyn Sticha, a State Patrol spokeswoman. “This could have been much more tragic.”

Investigators had no suspects, and they urged people to call with any tips.

“We are hoping table talk, friends gossiping, rumors or even little inklings” will help, Sticha said. “Even if it seems small or it might not even seem relevant, call the Minnesota State Patrol.”

Maki was taken to a hospital with a black eye and facial injuries and was released Monday. A passenger Maki’s wife, Dawn was unhurt.

“I figured Jesus didn’t want me up there, has stuff for me to do down here and kind of got me through this one,” Ted Maki said.
