EDMONDS — An early morning carport fire on Thursday set off small explosions and caused about $85,000 in damage.

The fire was reported just before 4 a.m. in the 23400 block of 78th Avenue W.

Witnesses told firefighters a carport caught fire and the fire quickly spread to an adjacent carport. Firefighters arrived to find both structures ablaze.

A vehicle under one of the carports also caught fire. The car’s gas tank likely ruptured and exploded. Other small explosions were likely caused when the fire ignited flammable liquids and equipment being stored in the carports.

Edmonds firefighters extinguished the blaze. The carports were destroyed and there was some damage to the outside of a house. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Everett: Crash victim opts for later care

An Everett man who got a ride home Wednesday night after crashing his motorcycle later called 911 when he decided he needed medical attention, officials said.

The man, 27, was still at Providence Everett Medical Center on Thursday morning, where he was being treated for serious injuries, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

The crash occurred around 10 p.m. at the intersection of 79th Avenue SE and Eighth Street SE in Everett. The man apparently went through some vegetation and struck a tree stump and then a chain link fence, Hover said.

Detectives are investigating speed and alcohol as possible factors in the crash.
