Goodbye, Dawg Fans

Published 6:36 pm Thursday, September 27, 2007

That’s what public address announcer Lou Gellerman will be saying after Saturday’s game. Gellerman, known for the line, “Hello, Dawg Fans” announced today that he will retire. He plans on saying his famous line one more time before handing the microphone over for good.

“That news came as a little bit of a shock to me,” said Tyrone Willingham. “I just heard that today. Anyone who has done it as long as he’s done it becomes an institution. It’s almost like you can’t do something without them being there. He’ll be missed and he’s added a great deal to the football atmosphere at the University of Washington.”

Here’s the release on gohuskies.com.

In football news … actually there wasn’t much football news today. Willingham said linebacker Matt Houston is still limited, and may not be ready to go Saturday. Houston has been used on special teams this season. Linebacker E.J. Savannah seems to be improving from the neck stinger that was bothering him, should be fine this week.

If you missed today’s Herald, here’s a story looking at the Huskies’ defense and the need to stop big plays. And here’s a story on USC’s Taylor Mays, an O’Dea High School grad coming back to play in his hometown.

The L.A. Times also had a story on Mays today. It also includes the latest round of glowing quotes about Jake Locker from USC coach Pete Carroll.

In UW soccer news (sort of) it looks like the U.S. Women’s coach shouldn’t have benched former Husky Hope Solo for the team’s World Cup semifinal.
