SEATTLE — King County Executive Ron Sims wants the county to go into the ferry business.

He sent at letter to Gov. Chris Gregoire Thursday offering to take over the foot-ferry service between Vashon Island and downtown Seattle that the Legislature no longer wants to fund.

Sims also wants to start five other Seattle ferry routes on Puget Sound and Lake Washington.

The King County Council must still approve Sims’ plan to crate a marine division. The Legislature has given counties the authority to impose a property tax for ferry districts.

The Vashon route is expected to cost $1.7 million a year.
