Lynnwood: Stalking awareness class set

People are invited to a free training class to learn about the dangers and concerns of stalking.

The class is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Mountlake Terrace Library community room, 23300 58th Ave. W.

The South Snohomish County Domestic Violence Task Force is planning to lead the class, which was organized to draw attention to January as National Stalking Awareness Month.

Monroe: Event raises money to fight cancer

The American Cancer Society is set to kick off its annual Relay For Life of Monroe-Sky Valley celebration at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the East County Senior Center, 824 Village Way.

About 100 people are expected to attend the event, which will feature inspirational speeches by survivors and food and prizes.

Founded 20 years ago by Tacoma physician Dr. Klatt, the Relay For Life has grown to be a nationwide fundraising event.

Relay For Life is a family-oriented event in which teams will walk, run or stroll in shifts around the track for 24 hours.

The annual Relay For Life of Monroe is set to be held on May 31 and June 1 at Sky River Park.

People can learn how police operate

The Monroe Police Department plans to host a citizen academy in February. The eight-week course teaches Monroe residents about how their police department works.

Classes include information on identity theft, Internet safety, domestic violence, child abuse and many other topics.

The academy begins Feb. 5. Applications may be picked up at the front counter of the Monroe Police Department, 818 W. Main St.

Mountlake Terrace: Mayor and pro tem re-elected to posts

Mayor Jerry Smith and Mayor Pro Tem Laura Sonmore were unanimously re-elected to their positions this week.

Smith, elected to the City Council in 2001, is scheduled to serve as mayor until the end of 2009. He has served on the Mountlake Terrace Youth Athletic Association, the Senior Citizens Advisory Board and the Civil Service Commission. Smith is active with the Terrace-Brier Lions Club and he helps plan the annual Christmas tree lighting.

Sonmore was appointed to the City Council in 2000, elected for the remainder of the term in 2001 and re-elected in 2003. She serves on the Mountlake Terrace Finance Committee and as a council liaison to the Arts Advisory Commission.

Sultan: Chance to meet candidates

The Sultan Civil Service Commission is planning an open house with two finalists for police chief from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the Sultan Middle School Commons.

The commission is looking to replace Fred Walser, who resigned as police chief last year. Residents can meet the candidates and fill out forms to offer feedback to the commission.

The commission plans to determine the candidate’s eligibility for the job. Then the mayor and city officials hope to make a decision as soon as possible, said Donna Murphy, the commission’s interim secretary.
