Caucuses about much more than voting

I love the caucus system. The purpose of the caucus is for political parties to choose their standard bearer for the general election. Democrats choose their preference and Republicans choose theirs. The caucus provides a forum where issues are discussed and form the foundation for the party’s platform. These forums are also offer a chance to express your opinions and views. Attendees can volunteer to run for PCO, the most basic position in politics. PCO is one of the most powerful positions in either party. They choose party officials and are the only ones allowed to vote to fill office vacancies. Caucuses help to build and give direction to the parties. So much more is accomplished at the caucuses than whatever could be achieved by a simple primary ballot.
Why are some independent voters so arrogant that they think they have a right to choose the Democratic or Republican standard bearer? These people are afraid to make a commitment to stand up for their beliefs. Independents are the reason that the Republican Party was taken over by the religious right and why the Democratic Party is controlled by liberals. Independents prefer instant democracy; they spend only a few minutes voting and its over. They don’t want to a take a few hours on a Saturday participating in real grass roots politics. I highly recommend that everyone make an effort, find out where your party’s precinct caucus will be held on Feb. 9 and attend. If you’ve never been to one, it’s a worthwhile and rewarding experience.
