High school students chosen for WMEA

Shorecrest and Shorewood high school students have been selected for all-state musical groups and will perform at the Washington Music Educators Association conference in Yakima Feb. 15-18.

Music students from across the state have been chosen to participate in the 54th annual Washington Music Educators Association All-State Band, Orchestra or Choir. The best musicians in each genre will rehearse together under the direction of world-renowned conductors and present their final concert in Yakima’s historic Capitol Theatre and SunDome.

From Shorecrest’s concert band, the students are Hans Anderson, Daniel Baker, Colin Chandler, Thomas Gibson, Hillary Osborne, Cliff Plesha, Trevor Preston and Jason Zhu;

from Shorecrest’s wind ensemble: Danny Griffin and Sho Kato; from the symphony orchestra: Emily Webb and Anna Mines; from the chamber orchestra: Dean Oswald and from the choir: Kelsey Monson.

From Shorewood’s concert band, the students are Emilie Barker, Peter Erickson and Tori Lewis; from the wind ensemble: Alex Brock; from the symphony orchestra: Ashley Greyell, Julia Hayes, Margaret Hendrickson, Calvin Jahng, Jack Lu, Andrew Namkung, Jennifer Nielsen, Laura Rohrer, Allison Sherris, Hannah Song, Tim Tan and Molly Tourtelot; from the chamber orchestra: Amy Leang, Tobin Schindler and from the mixed choir: Jenni Herold and Kirsten Ruddy.

Co-op Preschools hold open houses

The public is invited to open houses hosted by four of the Parent Education/Co-op Preschools affiliated with Shoreline Community College, Saturday, Feb. 9.

The North City, Shoreline, Shorenorth and Woodinville co-ops will host the open houses from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., except for Shoreline, which will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To learn about the co-op preschools and for addresses and directions, see www.shoreline.edu/parentcoop.html or call 206-546-4593.

The programs are part of the college’s Parent Education program that offers services to children from birth to 5. Parents attend lectures, participate in discussion groups and earn college credits.

Bob Koontz to retire as principal

Bob Koontz, principal of Briarcrest Elementary School for the past four years, has announced his retirement, effective at the end of the 2007-08 school year in June.

Prior to joining Briarcrest, Bob was an elementary principal in the Issaquah School District for 20 years. In all, he has spent over 38 years in public education.

His wife, Mary Koontz, is principal at Echo Lake Elementary. They have four children and three grandchildren.

The District will begin a search for Koontz’s successor immediately and will involve all segments of the Briarcrest community in the hiring process, said superintendent Sue Walker in a press release.

SCC Toyota T-TEN program wins award

The Toyota T-TEN Program at Shoreline Community College is one of five programs nationwide to receive the 2007 T-TEN School Recognition Award from Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. The award is given to the highest performing T-TEN schools located at colleges across the country. Shoreline also received the award last year.

Shoreline’s program was selected for its implementation of the national training model, including placement of students at Toyota dealerships, meeting graduate objectives, maintenance of instructor and program certifications and compliance with Toyota training requirements.

The college was also commended for providing a Toyota professional-technical certificate through the Extended Learning program to support industry demand for certified technicians.
