Local youngsters win Elks free throw contest

Katherine Stack of Mukilteo and Tyson Human of Arlington won their age divisions Saturday at the Washington State Elks Association Hoop Shoot in Bellevue.

Stack, who attends Mukilteo Elementary School, made 21 of 25 free throws to win the girls 8-9 division.

Human, who attends Kent Prairie Elementary School, made 15 of 25 shots to capture first place in the boys 8-9 division.

Each earned the right to compete in the regionals on March 1 in Portland, Ore.

Snohomish grad honored: ESPN The Magazine has named Sydney Benson of the Eastern Washington University women’s basketball squad to its All-District 8 academic second team.

Benson, a Snohomish High School graduate, has a 3.88 grade-point average. She’s majoring in English and French. She has helped the Eagles earn top-10 appearances on the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Academic Honor Roll Top 25 in each of her first two years at Eastern.

On the court, Benson averages 11.0 points per game and leads the Eagles with an average of 7.4 rebounds per game.

Curling

Junior national championships: Team Washington fell one victory short of the semifinals Friday at the 2008 U.S. Men’s Curling Junior National Championships at the Portage Curling Club in Portage, Wis.

Led by Matt Thomas of Everett, Team Washington (6-3) finished round-robin play tied with North Dakota for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Thomas and his teammates — Sam Galey, Nicholas Pleasants and Jake Vukich, all from Seattle, and Justin Shega of Minnesota — finished the tournament fifth overall after losing the tiebreaker to North Dakota, 9-7.

Gymnastics

Leading Edge wins team trophies: Teams from Everett-based Leading Edge Gymnastics won first-place trophies in Levels 4, 5, 7 and 8 at the Seattle Open, which was held Jan. 18-20 at the Lynnwood Convention Center.

Jordan Widener of Snohomish was first in the all-around in Level 8 with 37.425 points. Jeia Villacis of Everett finished third in the Junior A division (36.250) after placing first on the bars (9.475).

In Level 7, Danielle Wilson of Marysville placed second overall (37.025) and won the floor event (9.475). Athina Ebert of Mill Creek placed third in the Junior B division (36.900).

Kaitlin Sotelo of Snohomish placed first overall (36.660) in Level 6, and Jillian Ohlemeier of Stanwood was third (36.275) in the Child D division.

In Level 5, Sarah Kaye of Lake Stevens finished first (37.050) and Brooke Allen of Mill Creek was second (36.975). Sierra Bequette of Lynnwood placed third (36.257) in the Child D division.

Laura Bennison of Lake Stevens tied for second place overall (37.650) in Level 4, and Raechal Allen of Marysville was fourth (36.200).

Bowling

Tuttle rolls 300 games: Brandon Tuttle, a member of the Cascade High School bowling team, rolled his first 300 game in a competition on Jan. 17 at Strawberry Lanes in Marysville.

Tuttle, whose previous high game was a 290, bowled games of 204 and 218 earlier in the day. In his final game, Tuttle rolled 12 straight strikes to record his first 300 game. In all, he had strikes in 26 out of 36 possible frames over the three-game meet.
