Firefighters aid one of their own

Marysville Professional Firefighters Local 3219 plans a benefit from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Boston’s The Gourmet Pizza, 16918 Twin Lakes Ave., Smokey Point, to help a Lake Stevens firefighter and paramedic pay for cancer treatments.

Firefighters will wait tables and bus dishes for donations during a Fuel the FLAIM (Firefighters Lending Assistance In Marysville) event.

The firefighter noticed a lump on his neck in July and was diagnosed with head and neck cancer.

FLAIM has been a Marysville program for 15 years. A fire engine will be at Boston’s during daylight hours. Feel free to take pictures.

See plans for Highway 532

The state Department of Transportation plans an open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Port Susan Middle School in Stanwood.

See improvements planned for Highway 532. Discuss project designs and how they will improve safety and travel.

Highway 532 runs from Camano Island to I-5. Between 2000 and 2006, Stanwood’s population increased by more than 25 percent and Camano Island’s increased by nearly 11 percent. This link through Stanwood handles almost 20,000 vehicles each day.

Using 2005 Gas Tax funds, crews will build safety and traffic flow improvements from Camano Island to just east of 12th Avenue NW, including longer turn lanes, truck climbing lanes and a replacement for the Gen. Mark Clark Bridge.
