SNOHOMISH — No one was hurt in a fire on Sunday that likely started because of a wood stove.
The homeowners discovered smoke filling their house in the 15600 block of 88th Street SE. Firefighters found fire under the floors in the wall near a wood stove, Snohomish Deputy Fire Chief Ron Simmons said. They had to rip up the floor and the wall to get to the fire, he said.
The fire was investigated by the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Malnourished dogs lead to cruelty charge
SNOHOMISH — A man was charged Monday with first-degree animal cruelty after malnourished dogs reportedly were discovered on his property in December.
Won Young Ham, 49, faces a felony charge and will be summoned to appear in Snohomish County Superior Court.
Snohomish County Animal Control officers were alerted to what appeared to be a starving dog tied to a tree. An officer found several other dogs, including two red husky mix puppies that “were extremely emaciated,” according to charging papers filed by Jarrett Goodkin. Nearby, the officer found a bag containing the bodies of two more puppies, papers said.
The two live puppies were taken to a veterinarian clinic for medical attention. The veterinarian said the condition of the pups was caused by weeks or months of neglect and starvation, papers said.
Ham told the officer he noticed the dogs getting skinny but didn’t feed them more or get them medical attention because he was too busy, Goodkin said. He told the officer the two dead pups apparently had gotten into a fight over food.

Lynnwood: Lighter likely started house fire
A boy playing with a lighter is believed to have caused a house fire in the 17000 block of 52nd Avenue W. in Lynnwood on Monday afternoon.
A flame from the lighter caught bedroom curtains about 3 p.m., said Marybeth O’Leary, a Lynnwood Fire Department spokeswoman.
Damage to the home was estimated at $20,000. There were no injuries.
“Children are naturally curious about fire and the tools adults use to make fire,” O’Leary said.
O’Leary offered two pieces of advice: Store matches and lighters high in cabinets that can be locked, and teach children that if they find matches or lighters to tell an adult.
