50 years ago (1958)

Police Chief George Nelson and Fire Chief Frank Schroeder escorted Hans Solie to a chair of Honor this morning where he received the congratulations of the city commissioners and many other friends on the occasion of his 79th birthday. Solie, a city councilman in 1908, was praised for his long and outstanding record as a civic booster and for his invaluable contribution to the development of the city. He was presented with a beach towel and straw sun hat.

Pat Dobson, Juanita Lason, Dorothy Tucker and Marilyn Smith were in charge of the spring tolo, “Shangri-La,” being sponsored by the Associated Women Students at Everett Junior College. It would be held in the Monte Cristo ballroom.

25 years ago (1983)

VA, FHA mortgage rates were hitting a three-year low. The ceiling on the home mortgage interest rates was dropping one-half a percentage point next week to 11.5 percent, the government announced yesterday.

Margaret Bruland was to be installed as president of the Zonta Club of Everett at the Everett Pacific Hotel. Another new president was Stephen Clatterbuck of Edmonds, who held that office for the Seattle Pacific University student body. He was a communications major.
