MONROE — Donelda Queen, 50, has spent her life taking care of others.

Now the caregiver is looking forward to taking care of herself this summer.

Queen, of Monroe, just won $145,000 in a state lottery, the Washington State Lottery reported Tuesday. She bought her winning ticket in the Hit5 drawing on May 31 while shopping for groceries at Fred Meyer on U.S. 2 in Monroe.

“Everyone is just very happy for me,” Queen said in a statement. “My son, my daughter, even the 100-year-old woman I care for told me that she thinks it couldn’t have happened to a better person. It just feels so wonderful for it to be real.”

After winning the lottery, Queen cried a little bit and spent a sleepless night.

“I hid the ticket under my pillow, and I just kept holding on tight to it,” Queen said. “I kept thinking, ‘What on earth am I going to do with this money?’ “

After lots of thinking, Queen decided to invest most of the money for her retirement and buy a new Honda.
