Arlington

Volunteers to return to city boards

At its meeting Monday, the City Council is scheduled to approve renewals of terms for six citizens who serve on city boards.

Maxine Jenft and Skip Smith plan to serve on the Cemetery Board until 2012.

Leslie Larson plans to serve an additional four years on the Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission.

Amber Armstrong has an additional two-year term on the Hotel-Motel Tax Committee.

Steve Peterson plans to serve on the Civil Service Commission through 2014.

Vicki Handley has a six-year term on the Planning Commission.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at 110 E. Third St.

Fire district to serve pancakes today

The Arlington Heights Fire Department plans to flip pancakes until 11 a.m. today at its Pancakes in the Park.

The popular annual fundraiser offers breakfasts served for $5 a plate in Haller Park, 1100 West Ave.

Another fundraising event, the Arlington Kiwanis Club auction, follows at noon, also in Haller Park.

The auction raises money for graduating seniors of Arlington and Lakewood high schools.

Stanwood

North county academy trains new firefighters

After five months of training, 18 firefighter recruits recently graduated from a regional firefighting academy run by North County Fire/EMS and Snohomish County fire districts 17 and 15.

The recruits all received the national standard certification of firefighter 1.

“These are truly dedicated individuals who truly appreciate the opportunity to serve their community,” battalion chief of training Joel Smith said. “This is a very intense program, many do not make it.”

During the academy, the recruits learned valuable skills such as pulling people from cars after accidents, controlling fires, using ladders and equipment personal and team safety and customer service.

The new firefighters are now receiving their medical training and are expected to soon be assigned to fire and aid units in their communities.

Stanwood center planning crafts show

Benefit the Stanwood Community and Senior Center at the center’s Summer Arts and Craft Show planned for later this month.

The show is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 26 at the center at 7430 276th St. NW.

Crafters are currently being sought to sell their wares at the event. Craft tables are $12 for community center members and $15 for nonmembers.

Applications and payments should be submitted to Terri Riffle at the Stanwood Community and Senior Center. Checks should be made payable to the center.

The center is also planning a 50 percent-off sale in its thrift shop on the day of the arts and crafts show.

Tulalip

Tribal employee of the month is named

Stephen Doherty, a Tulalip Data Services employee, was selected as the July employee of the month for the Tulalip Tribes.

Doherty is working to design the tribal fiber-optic network. He was born and raised in the Marysville area, and has worked for the Tulalip Tribes since 2005. Doherty was chosen for the honor by the Tulalip Dental Clinic.

No stop for canoe journey at reservation

The annual Coast Salish Canoe Journey will end on Aug. 1 at Cowichan Bay, B.C., but canoes will not stop at the Tulalip Indian Reservation along the way. Dozens of canoes are expected to travel to Cowichan Bay. Some have already begun their journeys.

A canoe family from Tulalip will begin their journey on July 20.
