OLYMPIA — The crime rate in Snohomish County dipped slightly in 2007, according to a report released Tuesday by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs.

The Washington State Unified Crime Report for 2007 showed that the county crime rate mirrored statewide figures.

Overall crime in most Snohomish County communities fell, while reported crime in Lake Stevens and Marysville showed a rise in 2007 from 2006, the report said. Violent crime reports increased slightly countywide.

On Island County, overall crime was down while reports of violent crime also showed a rise.

The report is published annually based on data voluntarily reported by law enforcement agencies around the state.

Marysville: Two motorcyclists injured

The Washington State Patrol said troopers responded to two motorcycle crashes in Snohomish County on Tuesday morning within minutes of each other.

One accident on I-5 north of Arlington occurred just before 7 a.m. when a Lake Stevens man, 55, crashed into a garbage can in the middle of the highway. The second crash was on the U.S. 2 trestle. A woman in a car, 37, hit a Snohomish man, 20, who driving a new motorcycle, said trooper Keith Leary.

No one was seriously hurt, but officials are warning drivers to be extra watchful for motorcycles during warm weather and for motorcyclists to keep a wide eye for road hazards, Leary said.

Sunny days and high gas prices means more motorcycles are on the road, he said.

“We need to be vigilant to watch out for motorcycles,” Leary said. “And motorcyclist need to pay special attention to the roadway ahead.”
