Public forums on county budget scheduled
Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon won’t release the county’s two-year budget until Sept. 4, but three forums designed to inform county residents are already scheduled. Members of the County Council announced the forums Friday, stating that they want to hear from taxpayers before approving the two-year budget.
The first is 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 at the Stillaguamish Senior Center at 18308 Smokey Point Blvd. in Arlington.
Snohomish residents can meet at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 10 at Willis D. Tucker Community Park at 6705 Puget Park Drive in Snohomish.
In Edmonds, the meeting is 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the Edmonds City Council Chambers at 250 Fifth Ave. N.
County officials predict a $9 million shortfall this year. County leaders implemented a hiring freeze for every county department this month

Arlington
Arts council helps promote gardening
The Arlington Arts Council’s Art at The Plant Farm runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 13 and 14.
The fine art show includes a wide variety of art by the members of three north Snohomish County guilds: the AAC, Stanwood Camano Art Guild and the Greater Marysville Art Guild. There will be live music, plants, espresso, kettle corn and grounds for the public to stroll.
The event is at The Plant Farm at Smokey Point, 15022 Twin Lakes Ave., Marysville.

Human Services director nominated
The man who has served as interim Human Services Director for Snohomish County government has been nominated to the position permanently.
Ken Stark was named to the temporary position in June, after Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon dismissed Janelle Sgrignoli, who had worked for the county for two dozen years.
The Snohomish County Council’s Law and Justice/Human Services Committee is expected to consider the nomination at its regular meeting at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the county’s headquarters in Everett.

Volunteers sought to promote U.S. 2 safety
The Washington Traffic Safety Commission needs volunteers at the Evergreen State Fair to promote safety on U.S. 2. The fair started Thursday and runs through Sept. 1.
Volunteers are needed for these shifts: 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The fair is at 14405 179th Ave. SE.
Volunteers hand out rack cards and mints and engage passers-by in a quick five-question quiz about traffic safety on U.S. 2, a dangerous and congested highway in the Skykomish Valley.

Online map shows development
The city just updated its online construction and development activity map that shows what is being built in the city. The Web address is www.ci.snohomish.wa.us.
The map features major commercial and housing projects including Snohomish Station, a major economic development on Bickford Avenue. The 451,000-square-foot center added a new Fred Meyer, Kohl’s and Home Depot this year. Those businesses are expected to generate new sales tax revenue for the city.
