Trinity Lutheran Church installs new pastor
Trinity Lutheran Church invites the public to the installation of the Rev. Jocelyn Carson as the congregation’s new pastor at 4 p.m. Sunday at 2324 Lombard Ave., Everett. A reception will follow the installation.
Carson recently served as associate pastor at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Lynnwood. She was ordained in November 2005 and is a graduate of the School of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University. Carson also attended Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, Calif., and earned her bachelor’s degree in 1973 from Valparaiso University.
In 1996, she received a certificate in family support from Edmonds Community College and then worked at Evergreen Middle School in Everett as a family advocate for three years.
Carson is a member of the Lutheran Deaconess Association and as a deaconess has worked as a nursing-home chaplain, a church administrator and a youth director. She is a member of the board at Columbia Lutheran Home in Seattle and has been a school and community volunteer.
Carson and her husband, Dave, live in Shoreline where they have raised two children. They are amateur radio operators and enjoy camping, gardening and listening to many kinds of music.

Everett Catholic school collects food for needy
Everett’s St. Mary Magdalen School presents Celebration of Service through Sept. 26, an event where children of the school collect food for local food banks and for other charities, including March of Dimes, NOAH, the Amani Girls Home in Africa and the Healing for Children project in Guatemala.
This year, the school is collecting tuna, soups, canned vegetables and fruits, pasta, sauce, rice and cereal for the needy in Everett. The national St. Vincent de Paul Society is celebrating its 175th year of operation and the local St. Vincent de Paul will distribute the food.
Others who would like to donate food can bring items to St. Mary Magdalen School, 8615 Seventh Ave., Everett.

New home for homeless women, kids fills void
Local emergency shelters urgently need more housing for women and children, especially as the temperature drops.
Recovery for Life Training Center hopes to help.
The center hosts an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. Sept. 27 at a new safe house for women and children, recently donated to the center by a local couple. Founder Judy Hoff plans to provide a presentation highlighting the needs of local homeless women and children.
The recently remodeled home houses roughly 25 women and children. Recovery for Life Training Center also provides educational and vocational training for the women. There is still a need for furnishings at the home, said Julie Dickhaut.

South Everett gardener helps Gospel Mission
Kriss Erickson of Everett is known as the bread lady.
Erickson owns a three-quarter-acre piece of land in southeast Everett called the Healing Garden, where she grows flowers, fruit, vegetables, strawberries and medicinal herbs.
Each fall for the past five years, Erickson has made applesauce bread and applesauce from the apples from her trees. She donates the bread to the Everett Gospel Mission. She also makes strawberry bread and chocolate-dipped raspberries using organic chocolate.
Erickson also grows medicinal herbs and flowers to share with residents of the Snohomish Chalet, a rehabilitation center for people with brain injuries. She is building new areas to grow native medicinal plants that are threatened in the wild, she said.
