Fire safety coloring contest

During Fire Prevention Month in October, the Snohomish County Fire Prevention Association, Sno-Isle Libraries and Safe Kids Snohomish County are sponsoring a Prevent Home Fires coloring contest.

Cooking and heating are among the leading causes of home fires in the United States. There were 9,666 home fires in which 51 people died in Washington state in 2006.

For more information on the contest, go to www.snosafekids.org. Entries will be collected at Sno-Isle Libraries through Oct. 22.

Service planned for fallen firefighters

The 23rd annual Washington State Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service is 10 a.m. Sunday at the Capitol Rotunda in Olympia.

Three state firefighters who died in the line of duty will be honored: Chief Dan Packer of East Pierce Fire &Rescue, firefighter Marty Hauer of the Kent Fire Department and firefighter Andrew Palmer of the National Park Service.

The service includes speakers as well as music and traditional fire service observance with bagpipes and an honor guard.

New HeraldNet blog is a scream

It’s all horror movies all the time on the Scream Queen blog on The Herald’s Web site during the month of October. Herald copy editor Jacqueline McCartney tosses out a different horror-movie topic for discussion each day, starting with her favorite horror flicks.
