County budget panels scheduled

A series of three public forums to discuss Snohomish County’s 2009-10 budget are scheduled for this week. The first, 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, is titled “Mobile, Livable and Sustainable Communities” and will be hosted by Snohomish County Councilman Mike Coooper. The panel will address transportation, growth, parks, Paine Field and other issues. Additional panels on this topic are Oct. 14, 21 and 28.

The second panel, 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, is titled “Safe and Healthy Communities” and will be hosted by Councilman Dave Gossett. Affordable housing, public health, environmental health and other issues will be discussed. Additional panels on this topic are Oct. 15 and 22.

The third panel, 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, is titled “Public Accountability” and will be hosted by Councilman John Koster. The county’s long-term financial health, spending, building financial reserves and other topics will be discussed. Additional panels on this topic are Oct. 16 and 23.

All of the meetings will in the Henry M. Jackson Board Room on the eighth floor of the Robert J. Drewel Building in the Snohomish County government campus at 3000 Rockefeller Ave. in Everett.

Health screenings available at wellness fair

Girls to Grandmothers, a women’s wellness festival, will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct 11 at the Women’s Wellness Center, 2817 Rockefeller Ave. in Everett. It will include free health screenings, including tests for cholesterol, bone density and glucose.

Art show, auction to benefit children’s group

Deaconess Children’s Services is hosting a fall art show and auction beginning at 6 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Edmonds Yacht Club, 456 Admiral Way in Edmonds. How to keep finances on track

A class to help seniors manage and protect their assets during a time of stock market volatility is scheduled for 1 to 2 p.m. Oct 13 at the South County Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave. in Edmonds.

The class will include tips on when to sell your assets, information on how and why markets fluctuate and what steps to take to keep financial goals on tract. The event is free. Call 425-774-5555 for information.

Snohomish

Councilman received leadership certificate

City Councilman Doug Thorndike recently received a certificate of municipal leadership from the Association of Washington Cities after completing more than 30 hours of training.

The training is designed to provide mayors and council members in the state with knowledge and skills required for effective governance.

Thorndike has served on the Snohomish City Council since January 1998. In addition, he has been the council liaison to other regional groups such as Snohomish County Tomorrow and Community Transit.

Snohomish County

Tourism grants available

Snohomish County government is accepting applications from public and nonprofit agencies for grants to pay for projects that promote tourism and overnight stays in the county.

Funding for the grants comes from lodging tax collected at the county’s hotels and motels. The grant money will be awarded to projects that demonstrate the ability to draw visitors to the county.

The average winning grant proposal in the past has received about $6,500.

A workshop to help applicants create proposals will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 13 at the Holiday Inn at 3105 Pine St. in Everett.

Grant applications are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 27 and should be delivered to the county’s Economic Development Division at 3000 Rockefeller Ave., M/S #411, Everett, WA 98201.
