Darrington celebrates with parade

DARRINGTON — TimberFest is a chance to bring the community together, encourage voters to cast ballots, donate to the food bank and celebrate homecoming at the high school.
It’s an event people in town have come to look forward to, said Pat Forlines, who works at Darrington Family Support and Resource Center.
The third annual TimberFest, sponsored by the center, is set to begin Friday with a 5 p.m. parade from Old School Park, 1070 Alvord St., to Darrington Elementary School.
Mayor Joyce Jones is the parade’s grand marshal. Smokey Bear is scheduled to make an appearance. The Loggers football team is set to ride in vehicles behind Snohomish County Sheriff John Lovick. And Darrington High School students are working on floats for the parade. Even the homecoming rival, the La Conner Braves, is invited to walk to in the parade, Forlines said.
The family support center plans to serve a supper of hamburgers and salads from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria. Admission to the dinner is $1 and a can of food for the Darrington Food Bank, but no one will be turned away, Forlines said.
During the dinner, children can enjoy a carnival and adults can practice their voting skills by judging some apple pies baked by such public officials as Jones, Lovick, state Rep. Kirk Pearson and county Councilman John Koster.
“We want to encourage people to get out the vote for the general election, so the apple pie contest will be done through an old-fashioned ballot box,” Forlines said.
Funding for the dinner comes from a grant to the resource center and from donations from local businesses, she said.
The highlight of the evening, of course, is the high school homecoming football game, Forlines said.
“We shut the cafeteria doors at 7 p.m. and everybody heads over to the football field,” she said. “It’s an awesome event that empowers our community to come together.”
TimberFest
TimberFest 2008 is set to begin at 5 p.m. Friday with a parade and dinner at Darrington Elementary School. It ends with the Loggers homecoming football game at 7 p.m.
