MONROE — It’s been a long season for Snohomish but the Panthers seem to be peaking at the right time. After finishing the regular season under .500 and getting into the district tournament by winning a play-in game, the Panthers defeated Monroe 4-0 Monday in Monroe to advance to the next round of the 4A District One Girls Soccer Tournament.
“It was a complete team effort,” Snohomish coach April VanAssche said.
VanAssche recently started tweaking the lineup, occasionally swapping forward Shillia Crosby with sweeper Juliet Desmarais and moving outside forward/halfback Melanie Bjornethun to outside fullback.
The move payed dividends Monday as Desmarais scored Snohomish’s first two goals and Crosby served as an integral part of the defense in the shutout effort.
“They both play well no matter where we put them,” VanAssche said.
VanAssche compliments the girls humility, recognizing that players often dislike going from being a scorer to doing defensive grunt work.
Bjornethun assisted Desmarais’ first goal in the 14th minute. Kathryn Haynes assisted the second Desmarais goal and scored the final two goals as well off of Courtney Johnson and Grace Nelson assists.
Cori Brown got the shutout for Snohomish (7-8-1 overall), making nine saves in the process. Dani Philippart kept goal for Monroe.
Shorewood 2, Arlington 0: At Shoreline, Louise Albin took a pass from Ashleigh Marchant in the 48th minute and sent the ball into the net from 20 yards out to give Shorewood (12-3-2 overall) the only score it would need to defeat Arlington in the loser-out Class 4A District 1 playoff match. With an assist from Albin, Anastasia Norins added an insurance goal for the Thunderbirds in the 77th minute. Madison Hollenbeck recorded the shutout in goal for Shorewood, which advances to play again at 7 p.m. Thursday against the loser of today’s Stanwood-Jackson match.
