Everett

Planners to study big rezone proposals

The Everett Planning Commission tonight has scheduled workshops for three major rezone requests that are expected to go before the advisory board next year.

The commission is scheduled to meet tonight at 6:30 at Everett Station’s fourth-floor Weyerhaeuser Room, 3201 Smith St.

The largest is a proposal by cement maker Cemex to transform its quarry and concrete plant in southwest Everett into a master-planned neighborhood with homes, shops, restaurants, open space, offices and light industrial ventures.

The company is proposing to develop 118 acres with 1,165 houses and apartments, 100,000 square feet of commercial space, 400,000 square feet of industrial space, and 14 acres of public plazas and open space.

Critics of the development have expressed concern that allowing housing in the industrial area could create potential land-use conflicts with the nearby Boeing Co. assembly plant and other industrial businesses in the area.

Other projects up for discussion are a request to rezone a half-acre at 2330 Melvin Ave. from single family to multifamily and a request to increase allowable density of homes for 0.3 acres at 3601 W. Mukilteo Blvd., just north of Soundview Deli &Grocery.
