Arlington

First aid and CPR classes offered Jan. 19 and 20

Arlington Parks and Recreation Department will offer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation classes.

Sheila Davis is scheduled to give first aid instruction to people age 12 and older from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 19 in the community room at Arlington Boys &Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE.

Davis plans to teach CPR from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 20, also in the community room.

Cost for the classes is $25 each.

Free breakfast served, volunteers needed

A free breakfast is served from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesdays at Hosanna Christian Fellowship, 401 N. Dunham Ave., in Arlington.

This breakfast program is provided by four community churches.

Tribe taking applications for grant program

The Stillaguamish Tribe is accepting applications from public and non-profit agencies for projects that will address impacts on north Snohomish County resulting from Stillaguamish tribal gaming operations at the Angel of the Winds Casino.

The funds are awarded on a competitive basis to eligible applicants who can demonstrate the ability to complete their projects by Dec. 31, 2009.

The tribe opened the casino in October 2004 and added 44,000 square feet in December.

Under an agreement with the state, the Stillaguamish Tribe is required to reserve 2 percent of its net profits to give to local agencies.

A committee that reviews applications for the money includes representatives from the city of Arlington, Snohomish County, the state Gambling Commission and the tribe.

Completed applications must be postmarked or received by the Stillaguamish Tribal Offices no later than 5 p.m. Feb. 5. Faxed or e-mailed applications will not be accepted. Mailing address for the Stillaguamish Tribe is P.O. Box 277, Arlington, WA 98223-0277.

Camano Island

Friends of the library group forms on Camano

Camano Island Library Friends group is scheduled to work at 7 p.m. Thursday at the library, 48 N. Sunrise Blvd.

In partnership with Sno-Isle Libraries, the friends of the library group plans to enhance library services and programs.

Free health, finances workshop for seniors

A workshop to help seniors with health and financial issues is planned at the Abbott Wolfe Center for the Cascade Seniors.

Taught by Sandi McCaulley, the free workshop is set for 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the center on Darrington Street.

Granite Falls

Library offers story time for preschoolers

Children ages 3-5 can enjoy stories, songs, crafts and getting ready to read at the free Ready Readers story time events offered by the Granite Falls Library.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or care giver.

The story time begins at 11 a.m. Jan. 12 and 26 at the library, 815 E. Galena St.

Stanwood

Food and toy drive reach records for donations

North County Fire/EMS firefighters and baristas from the Stanwood Starbucks stores worked together in December to help collect food for the Stanwood and Arlington food banks and toys for the Stanwood Christmas Room.

More than 7,500 pounds of food and more than 750 new toys were collected, said North County Battalion Chief Christian Davis.

Despite the weather and economic challenges, it was a record year for collections, Davis said.

North County Fire files report for December

In December, North County Fire and Emergency Medical Services reported 292 calls.

There were four structure fires, 30 fire responses, 65 motor vehicle accidents, 143 medical calls, 22 service calls, two ice rescues and 26 hazardous responses. North County Battalion Chief Christian Davis said the December calls brought the 2008 total calls to 2,289.

Last Train to Stanwood concert benefits society

The South End String Band has announced an economic stimulus package for the Stanwood area.

Teaming up with the Stanwood Area Historical Society, the band plans to perform a concert of fiddle music and back-porch banter. The show starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, 27130 102nd Ave. NW, Stanwood.

Admission is $10 and includes food, wine and beer. Proceeds benefit the historical society.
