Business Briefly: Boeing sells 15 freighters to FedEx

FedEx said Monday that it will add 15 Boeing Co. 777 Freighters to its fleet. The carrier exercised options for the additional freighters from its original order in 2006. With Monday’s announcement, FedEx has a total of 30 777 Freighters on order from Boeing and is the largest customer for the cargo jet. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, FedEx also said it will defer some deliveries of its original 777 order. Boeing will deliver the first four 777s in 2010 rather than beginning deliveries to FedEx later this year.
Everett Mall opens new barbecue eatery
A new restaurant is set to open at the Everett Mall at 11 a.m. on Monday. Famous Dave’s BBQ will open in a parking lot in front of Sears at the mall, said Linda Johannes, the mall’s general manager. This will be the chain’s fifth restaurant in Washington, said Jim Perkins, district and marketing manager of the barbecue restaurant. The chain, created in 1992, has three other restaurants in Utah as well. The restaurant will be the latest addition to the mall, which has about 120 stores. Steve &Barry’s, a casual apparel retailer, is expected to shut down soon.
Clorox Greenworks rises to top of eco cleaners
One year after bleach maker Clorox started selling a line of natural cleaning products, it has reached the top of the market for eco-friendly cleaners. The company announced Monday that its Greenworks cleaners, made mostly with coconut oil, corn and lemon — and without bleach — have become the top-sellers among natural cleaners. Clorox now has 42 percent of the total market, estimated to generate more than $200 million per year in sales.
Dell Inc., 46 states settle computer service and financing complaints
Dell Inc. said Monday it has agreed to a legal settlement with states that claimed the computer company made misleading financing and service offers to PC buyers. Dell will pay $3.85 million to at least 46 states participating in the settlement. A portion of the money will be used to reimburse states for legal costs. Shares of Dell dropped 47 cents, or 4.2 percent, to close at $10.65. Attorneys general from Connecticut and Washington, representing a much larger group of states, approached Dell with their concerns in the middle of 2008.
Financier Bernard Madoff still free on bail
A judge allowed disgraced money manager Bernard Madoff to remain free on bail Monday, rejecting an attempt by prosecutors to send him to jail for mailing more than $1 million in jewelry to family and friends over the holidays. The decision is sure to outrage investors who have been clamoring for Madoff to be sent to jail for allegedly carrying out the largest financial fraud in history — a fraud that authorities say he described as a Ponzi scheme. Prosecutors said the gifts were grounds to have his bail revoked because what’s left of Madoff’s assets will have to be returned to burned investors. But the judge was not swayed by the their arguments that Madoff represents an economic danger to the community.
