Get smart
Starting Monday, reporter Bill Sheets takes the wheel of Street Smarts, The Herald’s forum for drivers.
If you have a question about any road-related matter, send it to him and he’ll get an answer from the transportation powers-that-be.
If you simply have a gripe or an interesting story — or want to share anything else on your mind regarding local traffic or driving — he’d like to hear from you, too.
Send your questions and comments for Street Smarts to stsmarts@heraldnet.com.
Poetry slam: Evergreen Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Marysville offers the Fourth Ever Evergreen Invitational Poetry Slam.
It’s planned for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 1607 Fourth St. in Marysville.
It’s a head-to-head competition with hundreds of dollars in prizes and — organizers say — huge bragging rights, too.
A poetry slam is a competition in which poets perform their own work and are judged by randomly selected audience members holding up score cards, Olympics-style. The job of the judges is to resist being influenced by the audience; the job of the audience is to influence the judges.
It costs $10 to get in, $5 for students.
Reach the beach: Sarah Schmidt and Dan Pedersen, co-authors of “Getting to the Water’s Edge on Whidbey and Camano Islands,” are set to speak at 6:30 tonight at the Camano Island Library, 848 N. Sunrise Blvd. on Camano Island.
They will discuss 10 beaches on Camano Island. “Getting to the Water’s Edge” details 67 sites on Camano and Whidbey islands and features trail maps and sections on kayaking, whale watching, fishing, clamming, bird watching, geology and history.
