Everett: Garden Club meeting Wednesday
Karen Hempen is the guest speaker at the Everett Garden Club’s meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Community Church, 710 Pecks Drive, Everett.
Hempen owns a flower shop that she bought from her mother a decade ago. She plans to show the club how to cut and care for flowers. Anyone is welcome to the free event. Coffee, tea and snacks will be served.

Island County: Water group needs member
Island County officials are looking for applicants to complete a term on the county’s 12-member water resources advisory committee. Applicants should live in the Oak Harbor area.
The term runs until May 2010. Meetings are monthly either on Whidbey Island or Camano Island.

Lake Stevens: Program teaches family skills
The Strengthening Families Program, a class for teens and their parents, begins Tuesday.
The program is from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through April 21 at Cavelero Mid High School, 8220 24th St. SE.
The free class is offered by the Lake Stevens Family Center and Lake Stevens School District.
The program teaches skills in areas such as communication, identifying dreams and goals, dealing with stress and peer pressure, and responding to house rules. Free dinner and child care are provided.

Monroe: School budget discussed
The Monroe School Board and Superintendent Ken Hoover have scheduled a school funding forum for 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the library at Park Place Middle School, 1408 W. Main St.
The event includes a brief synopsis of how the state funds education and the challenges public schools face in providing a quality education for every child. Like many schools, those in Monroe are facing declining resources.

Mountlake Terrace: Violations bureau moves
The city has moved its violations bureau from City Hall to the police station.
The violations bureau handles all tickets and infractions issued by the Mountlake Terrace Police Department.
The police station is west of City Hall at 5906 232nd St. SW on the civic center campus.
Bureau hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
An exterior drop box will be installed next week.

Mukilteo: Black cat adoption day set
Purrfect Pals, a nonprofit cat shelter, plans to run its Black Cats are Lucky Adoption Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Food Emporium shopping center, 13619 Mukilteo Speedway.
All cats and kittens up for adoption have been spayed or neutered and started on vaccinations and have implanted identification microchips.

Snohomish: Exhibit features region’s artists
Arts of Snohomish is hosting an exhibit featuring Northwest artists called “Art — Yes We Can” through the end of March at the gallery, 105 Cedar Ave. Painter and instructor Ted Pankowski of Arts Umbrella in Bothell organized the show.
A reception with the artists is planned for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the gallery.
