Meadowdale girls win state opener

TACOMA — Anna Molitor scored nine points and Meadowdale held on for a 40-39 victory over Auburn Mountainview in the first round of the Class 3A girls basketball tournament on Wednesday.
With Meadowdale leading 37-36, Brianne Wills scored to give Auburn Mountainview a one-point lead with just 4 minutes left. The teams went scoreless for the next two minutes before Julia Fjortoft scored to put the Mavericks back in front. A block by Molitor led to a fast break basket by Dana Horn to give the Mavericks a three-point edge.
Aalia Braboy scored with 40 seconds left to get Auburn Mountainview within one, but Meadowdale (20-5) ran out the clock.
Bianca Landa and Gabi Beyer added seven points each for Meadowdale.
Ida Huners led the way for Auburn Mountainview (15-8) with nine points. Stephanie Smolinski added eight
