PREP TRACK ROUNDUP

LAKE STEVENS — Lake Stevens track and field head coach Jeff Page said he almost forgot about the battle between last year’s Wesco South and Wesco North boys champions because of his plans to commemorate Duane Lewis’ induction into the state coaches’ Hall of Fame.

It was a good thing he didn’t.

Lake Stevens outlasted Jackson 109 to 103.5 in the boys division and 109.5 to 99.5 in the girls division during a four-team non-conference meet held Thursday at Lake Stevens High School.

“It was a heck of a meet,” Page said, “It’s never been this competitive of a meet before and this year was pretty exceptional.”

Lake Stevens’ Brennan Frost won four events — the 400-meter dash, high jump, long jump and anchored the 1,600 relay — and Eric Huswick won the shot put (43 feet, 3 inches) and discus (135-7) to give Lake Stevens the most points from any two team members.

Jackson dominated the distance races with Derek Woolsey (2 minutes, 0.87 seconds) winning the 800, Ben Lance (4:29.4) winning the 1,600 and Blake Nelson (10:04.81) winning the 3,200.

“It was a real competitive meet,” Page said, after saying the scores out loud. “I thought the distance races were really good. You could tell that both Jackson and Lake Stevens knew it was a tight meet and that they were going all out.”

The meet paid tribute to Lewis, Lynnwood’s 30-year head coach. Every school involved in the meet had ties to Lewis. Page and Jackson coaches Eric Hruschka and Pat Haller ran for Lewis at Lynnwood. Granite Falls assistant coach Ernie Goshorn previously assisted at Lynnwood.

Page said the connections to Lewis are something special for each school’s coach and that Lewis’ achieving Hall of Fame status was well deserved.

“Duane has been saying this is his last year, but he has been saying that for 30 years,” Page said with a chuckle.

Page said that Lewis visited the new Lynnwood high school that is being constructed and went onto the track venue only to get locked into it when the construction workers left for the day. Quite symbolic for someone who has stayed as a coach for three decades.

“When you get down to it, Duane has outlasted the building,” Page said.
