I-5 work brings lane closures

STANWOOD — Construction crews are scheduled Monday to begin a project that will repair concrete panels and smooth bumps along I-5 near Stanwood.

Drivers can expect lane shifts, as well as shoulder and lane closures during the day and at night.

The roadwork will stretch for more than 7 miles, from south of Highway 532 to just beyond the Skagit County line.

During the first week, crews plan to install signs and modify the shoulders of the freeway in preparation for the repair work.

The left and right shoulders of northbound I-5 are set to be closed from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Two lanes of the interstate are set to be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. One lane of I-5 will be closed continuously from 7 a.m. Wednesday through 5 p.m. May 12. The $4.7 million repair project is expected to employ about 45 people for about six months.

An average of 59,000 vehicles use this stretch of I-5 each day. The road is rutted and cracked because of its age and high traffic volumes, a state Department of Transportation spokesman said.
