DUVALL — If at first you don’t succeed try again — after all it may win you a game.
Such was the case for Archbishop Murphy’s Ian Houts Tuesday night.
After missing out on a scoring opportunity earlier in Murphy’s 2A District 1 semifinal match against Lakewood, Houts got a second chance, scoring the game-winner on an Erik McCaughan assist with 10 minutes remaining to lift the Wildcats to a 2-1 victory and a trip to the 2A state tournament.
“Houts had a chance to score earlier but was unable to finish. He kept working hard. It’s a show of what this team has got. They get down but they keep battling,” first-year Archbishop Murphy head coach Eddie Fernandez said.
With the win the Wildcats (14-4 overall) advance to the 2A District championship where they will face Sehome at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cedarcrest H.S.
The Wildcats are making their first trip to the state tournament since 2003 when they won the state title.
“Coming in this first year I didn’t know what to expect. We’ve exceeded some expectations,” Fernandez said.
Alexis Magana gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the first half.
Grant Bacus answered with a goal off an assist from Evander Ochoa that tied the score at 1-1.
Lakewood, last year’s district champion, will face the winner of Thursday’s Squalicum-Sultan game in a winner-to-state, loser out contest at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedarcrest.
Doug Ehlebracht was in goal for the Wildcats and Fernandez complimented his goalkeeper saying, “He had some key saves to keep us in the game.”
James Hoback tended goal for Lakewood.
Sehome 2, Cedarcrest 1 (OT): At Duvall, Sehome advanced to the 2A state tournament with the District 1 semifinal victory. Cedarcrest jumped out to a lead in the 30th minute, when Jeff Bieck (Cory Johnson assist) scored. Sehome fought back behind two unassisted goals from Nino Tursic, one in the 49th minute, the other coming in overtime. Colin McHargue was the goalkeeper for Cedarcrest (13-5-0). Sehome’s goalkeeper and record were not reported. Cedarcrest plays the winner of Thursday’s Bellingham and Lynden game in a winner to state/loser out game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cedarcrest H.S.
Shorecrest 1, Ferndale 0: At Mt. Vernon, Ian Adams’s goal off a Glenn Paden assist gave Shorecrest the 3A District 1 win over Ferndale and allowed the Scots to move into the 3A District 1 title game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Vernon H.S. Eric Baker recorded the shutout for Shorecrest (17-1).
