Arlington names coordinator to help people volunteer

ARLINGTON — The city recently launched a new volunteer program that works as a clearinghouse for organizations that need help and people who have time to give.

Mayor Margaret Larson is encouraging people to dedicate some energy to the community.

“With the downturn in the economy, people are remembering the importance of caring for each other and helping those in need,” Larson said in the city’s summer newsletter. “Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills. A volunteer job that you love can even help shape your ideas about new career goals.”

Scott Whippo is the new volunteer coordinator for the city. Whippo, a longtime volunteer, is helping city staff expand the city’s volunteer programs.

For example, Arlington police and fire departments have volunteer programs for reserve officers and firefighters. There’s always a need for help in the parks, at summer events and at the library.

Whippo’s task is to help people who want to volunteer find a volunteer job that fits their interests and schedule. Part of that is a page on the city’s Web site.

“The page is a work in progress, so keep checking as new opportunities are added,” Whippo said.
