Zonta International award presented

Jean Cooley-McKay has been presented with the Length of Service Award by Zonta International. She received recognition for her contributions to the Zonta International Foundation during the Zonta Club of Everett’s 80th Anniversary celebration at the Everett Golf and Country Club in May.

Cooley-McKay joined Zonta in 1968 and served as a board member and as president from 1971 to 1973. She continues as an active member of the Zonta Club of Everett.

The Zonta Club of Everett is a visible service organization recognized for its advocacy and leadership in actively improving the status of women locally and globally.

NW Plus Credit Union announces scholarships

NW Plus Credit Union recently awarded high school and post-secondary students with scholarships to help continue their education. Scholarship recipients must be a member of NW Plus Credit:

Jessica L. VanSpeybrock, $1,000. She attended Everett High School, where she maintained a 3.72 GPA. She will be attending Washington State University and plans to study environmental sciences and communications.

Shawn Rood, $1,000. He attended Granite Falls High School, where he maintained a 3.94 GPA. He also participated in the Running Start program at Everett Community College and will be attending Kettering University to obtain a degree in chemical engineering.

Megan Edmonds, $1,000. She attended Arlington High School, where she maintained a 3.89 GPA. She will be attending Gonzaga University in the fall and hopes to study a diverse assortment of subjects. She has volunteered more than 1,000 hours throughout high school, including helping with the Special Olympics and teaching English abroad.

Natalie Spencer, $1,000. She attends Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida where she maintains a 3.42 GPA and belongs to the Honors Program. She is studying to become an engineer and a physicist. She is active in the Space Physics Research Lab and also worked as a structural engineering intern.

Anna Wiebelhaus, $750. She attends Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, where she maintains a 4.0 GPA in the American Sign Language-English Interpretation Program. She is working toward a National Interpreter Certification and would like to interpret in college and legal settings. She has already presented as a guest lecturer, has assisted in video creation for the National Technical Institute for the Deaf Center for Employment, and had an essay published in her school’s book “The Promise of Sustainability.” She also shares her skills by volunteering as a voice interpreter at New Hope Deaf Church in Shoreline.

Jessica Nielson, $750. She attends City University of Seattle, where she maintains a 3.81 GPA. She is studying to become a teacher and is working toward a degree in special education. Jessica has volunteered in several elementary schools, including Pioneer Elementary in Arlington and Kent Prairie Elementary.

Hanna O’Donnell, $500. She is attending Central Washington University, where she has maintained a 3.5 GPA. She is pursuing a degree in special education and wants to combine her education with her passion for music, theater, and animals to create a learning program for disabled students. On campus, she is involved in the Education Living and Learning Community, where she benefits from being surrounded by other education majors. She is also plays the position of winger for the Central Washington University rugby team.

NW Plus Credit Union’s scholarship program was established in 1993 and is open to members of the credit union.

Student wins second place in essay contest

Jason Roy Maki, a Marysville fifth-grader, has won second place in the nationwide 2009 Junior Rangers Essay Contest from the National Park Foundation. Jason received a $500 Visa gift card and an America The Beautiful Pass, and $2,000 to go to Grand Teton National Park.

Jason’s winning essay proposed creative ways to protect the national parks and the environment. All winning essays, from 400 entries, will be featured in the 2009 Junior Ranger Gazette, published by the contest sponsor, Unilever.

Clothes for Kids serves thousands of children

Clothes For Kids served 1,700 children two years ago. In 2008, the organization provided more than 3,500 wardrobes for children in need. The goal for this year was 4,000 wardrobes as well as an increase in offering school supplies and Working Wardrobes for men, women and teens.

This year, 5,100 children’s wardrobes have been provided for families in need. Volunteers have contributed 8,300 hours.

SCOUTS

Mukilteo Scout fourth in his family to be an Eagle

Nicholas Powell walked through Mukilteo neighborhoods offering free American flags to homeowners for his recent Eagle project. He also collected 47 weather-tattered flags to retire.

At Nick’s June Eagle Scout Court of Honor, he was presented with a U.S. flag personally autographed by the Robert Heft, the designer of the 50-star flag. Additionally, during his Eagle project, Nick met a father whose son is a soldier stationed in Iraq. The soldier mailed Nick a U.S. flag that had flown over one of Saddam Hussein’s former palaces.

Nick was a patrol leader and troop guide in his Mukilteo-based Troop 189. He also helped with Cub Scout Pack 189’s monthly meetings and conducted annual Crossover Ceremonies for Webelos who continued on to Boy Scouts.

Nick worked at Fire Mountain Boy Scout Camp for nine weeks in 2007 and taught merit badge requirements to hundreds of Boy Scouts attending Summer Camp. In 2008, he went on the Philmont Trek in New Mexico. Nick and his friends hiked 50 miles in 11 days.

The son of Don and Sonya Powell, Nick is a Kamiak High School graduate who will attend the Barrett honors college at Arizona State University to study electrical engineering.

As the fourth Eagle Scout in his family, Nick joins his father and two paternal uncles in becoming an Eagle Scout.
