Granite Falls: Work spruces up schools
Students might notice a few changes in Granite Falls schools when they return to classes next week.
Projects over the summer included repainting Monte Cristo Elementary School and refinishing the gym floors at the middle and high schools.
Also on tap are improvements to the old high school to save energy. The district will receive almost $40,000 in energy incentives from Snohomish County PUD and Puget Sound Energy, and estimates energy savings of $36,000 each year.
Lake Stevens: Kids’ school supplies sought
The Lake Stevens Family Center is still seeking donations to help fill more than 500 backpacks with school supplies for K-12 students in financial distress.
The family center plans to distribute the backpacks to families from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the center, 1803 123rd Drive NE.
Needed supplies are listed at www.lakestevensfamilycenter.org. Items may be dropped off at the center 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
Haircuts by appointment, dental sealants, Department of Social and Health Services consultations, free books, federal emergency grant applications and other community resources will be available.

Marysville: More produce for food bank
The Marysville Community Food Bank had a four-fold increase in fresh produce donations this week following a Herald story about the need for home-grown vegetables and fruit.
On Thursday the food bank had a whopping 976 donations. Director Joyce Zeigen said “thanks” and “please keep the donations coming” to Marysville and other local food banks.

Mill Creek: Park dedication Thursday
The city of Mill Creek will hold a ceremony to dedicate Highlands Park, 16123 Highlands Ave., from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday. Improvements included a new swing, play structure and refurbished trail.
Cake will be served and games will be provided for children. Parking is limited, so the city is urging guests to walk to the park.
Mountlake Terrace: Pavilion earns another distinction
Mountlake Terrace’s Recreation Pavilion has received the 2009 “Parents’ Pick Award” for best swim class in the Seattle area based on a vote on Nickleodeon’s Web site May 5 through July 15. This is the facility’s second award in 2009. Earlier, the facility received the “Best Pool for Toddlers” award from Seattle Magazine.
Mukilteo: School meals will cost more
School meals in the Mukilteo School District will cost 25 cents more than last year.
Elementary students will pay $1.25 for breakfast and $2.25 for lunch while middle and high school students will pay $1.50 for breakfast and $2.50 for lunch.
School in the Mukilteo district is scheduled to begin Sept. 2.
