Meal pays tribute to the value of military service

Bob Rawe in Stanwood could use some help for a very sweet program.

“Take A Vet To Lunch” offers a meal from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 24 at Stanwood United Methodist Church.

For $40, two people and two veterans can eat and chat.

The organization started with meals in 2008 served out of Rawe’s home. They moved the dinner program to Arlington, Marysville and now Stanwood.

He raises money by ticket sales, donations and from businesses who appreciate the program.

For more information, call 360-629-5054 or e-mail bobsoutback@verizon.net.

“When a serviceman or woman signs up for a branch of the military, they write the biggest check of all, made payable to the United State of America for an amount up to and including their life,” Rawe says. “They remain heroes well after they have served and managed to remain alive.”

If you aren’t ready to leave the gardening season behind, share your stories in Arlington.

The city of Arlington and WSU Master Gardeners offer “Grow Your Own Groceries” at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Boys &Girl Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE.

It’s free. Bea Randall will be the moderator, and she says all are welcome.

There will be a panel discussion where folks can chitchat about their summer products.

Talk about whether or not gardeners would like a program planned about small urban orchards and berries.

Meet fellow growers and dish the dirt.
