GRANITE FALLS — The Granite Falls girls soccer team cleared a moderate hurdle Wednesday, defeating Mt. Baker 3-2 in a play-in game to the 2A District 1 tournament.

Now the real challenges begin, starting with a Saturday showdown against Northwest Conference co-champion Sehome.

“We scouted them last week. It’ll be fun,” Granite Falls coach Craig Otto said. “If we play to our potential, it could go either way. But there have only been two games when we played to our potential, when we beat Lakewood and King’s.”

The first-round district playoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Whatcom Community College.

The Tigers (11-6 overall) jumped to a 2-0 lead Wednesday on goals by Katie Cashman and Katyann Powers, who scored in the 25th minute and assisted on Cashman’s goal in the seventh minute.

Cashman gave Granite Falls a 3-1 lead with a goal in the 52nd minute off a Cacia Stevens assist.

Lauren Frey scored both goals unassisted for Mt. Baker (8-8), the second in the 76th minute.

“We were able to possess the ball and keep it away from them the last four minutes,” Otto said.

Kelsey Carlson was in goal for Granite Falls. Mt. Baker’s keeper was Leah Ford.

Meridian 2, Coupeville 0: At Coupeville, Meridian eliminated the Wolves (4-13 overall) from the 1A District 1 playoffs.
