PREP ROUNDUP: Meadowdale stops Everett girls soccer team in double OT

MT. VERNON — The way the Everett girls soccer team started against Meadowdale Tuesday was no different than most starts this season, but the ending was totally unfamiliar.
The Seagulls scored in the fifth minute to take an early lead, but Meadowdale came back to hand Everett its first defeat of the season 2-1 in a 3A District 1 semifinal at Mt. Vernon H.S.
After Everett’s Kylie Beeson scored in the fifth minute, Meadowdale tied the score late in the first half. Then in double overtime, the Mavericks’ Maddi Null connected on a game-winner in the 89th minute to advance Meadowdale to a district championship game against Glacier Peak on Thursday.
The win snapped Everett’s perfect season. The defending state champion Seagulls fell to 17-1 overall. Meadowdale improved to 12-5-1.
“We just dug it out and left everything on the field,” Meadowdale head coach Chris Baldwin said. “The team was just absolutely ecstatic. We have been waiting for an opportunity to play Everett for two years. We wanted to show them what we could do … hats off to Everett, they played a great game, they are a quality caliber team.”
In the final minute of the second overtime, Null won a 50-50 ball near midfield, got behind Everett’s defense and dribbled up the line to find only the ball between her and Seagulls’ goalie Katie Johnson. She then shot it past the keeper for the win.
Everett started the game with a bang, controlling possession in Meadowdale’s half of the field for the first five minutes of the contest, and Baldwin said one defensive mistake cost the Mavericks, as Beeson connected on the goal.
Baldwin said that Meadowdale was able to gain its composure right after the goal.
“We stepped it up, right after that point there were no real obvious advantages from either team,” Baldwin added.
In the 32nd minute, Meadowdale’s Krista Bartkowski floated a corner kick to the far post, and Mackenzie Stapleton headed it in from 12 yards out to tie the score at 1-1.
“My initial reaction was that we are in this game and we can play with the best,” Baldwin said. “Mackenzie Stapleton, her work ethic and stamina on the field is just outstanding, she changes the opposing teams’ style of play.”
Meadowdale goalie Julia Grossenbacher had 11 saves, and stymied the efforts of Everett in the first overtime, Balwin calling her effort “phenomenal.”
Glacier Peak 1, Mt. Vernon 0: At Mt. Vernon, Katie Hawkins scored unassisted in the 55th minute, and the goal stood up as the difference in the 3A District 1 semifinal game. Nicole Giovine earned the shutout in goal for Glacier Peak. Tiffany Cruse was in goal for Mt. Vernon. Glacier Peak (14-3-1 overall ) advances to play Meadowdale in the title game Thursday. Glacier Peak won both regular season meeting with the Mavs, the most recent in a shootout.

Providence Classical Christain 3, Highland Christain 0: At Lynnwood, Providence Classical Christian won 25-18, 25-15, 35-33, ending PCC’s season with a 3-9 record in league and overall. Highland Christian is now 0-11, 0-13.
