TALKING POINTS
Ten straight penalties.
From late in the second period of Friday’s 5-3 loss in Portland to early in the second period of tonight’s loss in Seattle, Everett was whistled for 10 straight penalties. Tonight the Tips were whistled for the first six, five of those coming in the first period. So it’s not surprising Everett found itself in a 3-0 first-period hole.
Gotta be honest, some of those calls appeared to be a bit light. But credit to Seattle for its discipline, too. While some of the Everett penalties seemed questionable, I don’t recall seeing anything from the T-birds that I thought should have been called. Seattle finished with a 6-2 advantage in power plays.
Everett’s penalty kill once again struggled, allowing two more goals. However, given how much killing the Tips had to do in the first period, I’m inclined to give the penalty kill something of a pass here.
And when the teams were both at full strength, the Tips didn’t create a whole lot offensively anyway. Neither did Seattle, for that matter, as overall is was a pretty ho-hum game.
Everett now has its first three-game losing streak of the season.
TURNING POINT
What more can you say about five straight penalties in the first period?
HIT OF THE DAY
Not a lot that really stood out. Frankly, the biggest lick was the one Everett’s Campbell Elynuik put on the boards when he missed his target midway through the third period.
THREE STARS
First star: Prab Rai, Seattle. Scored Seattle’s first two goals.
Second star: Tyler Maxwell, Everett. Potted both Everett goals, both coming off deflections off Seattle players.
Third star: Charles Wells, Seattle. Two assists.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Everett’s line of Zack Dailey, Scott MacDonald and Dan Iwanski. These three aren’t Everett’s most-skilled forwards, but they caused Seattle the most trouble, purely from working hard down low.
