BOTHELL — Lynnwood girls basketball coach Everett Edwards told his team to disregard what happened in the regular season, and maximize its opportunity Wednesday night.
The Royals responded, overcoming a 7-0 deficit to start the game and broke a tie with 20 seconds remaining in regulation en route to a 54-50 victory over Everett Wednesday in a Wesco 3A seeding game at Lynnwood High School.
Lynnwood plays Glacier Peak at 6 p.m. Friday to determine which team will obtain the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds to the 3A District 1 playoffs. Everett will be the No.5 seed.
With the score tied at 50, Lynnwood’s Megan Cross grabbed a missed Everett free throw and hit a jumper to take a 52-50 lead. Casey Evans then stole the ball on the ensuing play, was fouled and knocked down both shots for a 54-50 lead and the victory.
“It was a tough fought game,” Edwards said. “We were able to settle down and figure it out, but, wow, it was a bitterly tight game the whole way through.
“We told (Lynnwood) that the records don’t mean anything. We knew it was gonna be a tough game before it even started, we went in with an idea that we have to win to continue in the Wesco tournament and we did just that.”
Lynnwood’s Mokun Fajemisin was a force inside the paint with 22 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, and Laycee Hill chipped in with seven points and nine boards.
“Fajemisin was huge, she was dominant inside, and was able to get to the foul line,” Edwards said. Fajemisin knocked down eight of 11 free throw attempts. “She was really good for us at the line and attacking the basket.”
Lynnwood lost both its games against Glacier Peak during the regular season.
