PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Lynnwood girls reach title game

SNOHOMISH — With just seconds left in the 3A girls District 1 semifinal, the Meadowdale girls basketball team got the ball into the hands of the right player. Julia Fjortoft drove the lane and drew a foul with just one second to go, trailing 48-46 to Lynnwood.
The senior guard had 17 points and was 6-for-7 on free throws entering the crucial situation, but she missed the first and intentionally missed the second. The Royals came up with the rebound and escaped with their first win over Meadowdale in 15 years according to coach Everett Edwards.
Lynnwood has never been a threat to go to state in recent years, playing in the shadow of the perennial contender Mavericks. Today, the Royals find themselves just one win away from something that was unthinkable outside of the Royal locker room prior to the season.
“I knew we had the talent,” Edwards said. “It’s just a matter of could we put it together?”
The tip of the spear for the Royals this year has been Mokun Fajemisin. The sophomore post tallied a team-high 16 points to go with 10 rebounds and six blocks.
“She was the driving force,” Edwards said. “She was pretty dominant.”
Tied at halftime Meadowdale raced out to a 7-0 run to start the third quarter but the Royals weathered the storm thanks to point guard Casey Evans. The 5-foot-3 guard had just seven points good for third on the team behind Fajemisin and Megan Cross’s 13, but her poise kept Lynnwood in the game.
“She did a tremendous job of dealing with their press,” Edwards said.
