PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Snohomish nips Oak Harbor in North opener

SNOHOMISH — Junior right-hander Grant Gunning struck out seven batters and Snohomish survived a wild sixth inning for a 5-3 Wesco North baseball win Tuesday at Snohomish High School.

The 6-foot, 3-inch hurler kept Oak Harbor’s hitters off kilter while the Panthers’ offense did just enough to pull out a win to start the league schedule.

“He (Gunning) was hitting his spots,” Snohomish head coach Kim Hammons said. “Just mixing his pitches, his location was outstanding. He kept them (Oak Harbor) off balance.”

Kenny Becker pitched out of a jam in the sixth inning and tossed a 1-2-3 seventh for his first save of the season.

Snohomish (1-0 league, 3-1 overall) took a 5-2 lead into the top of the sixth when Oak Harbor loaded the bases with one out. Jay Stout, Oak Harbor’s (0-1, 3-2) starting pitcher, hit a fly ball to deep center field that was caught by Tyler Tastad, who fell against the fence. A run scored from third and it appeared Oak Harbor plated another run, from second base, on the sacrifice fly.

The Panthers appealed the second run, saying the baserunner left second base early. The appeal was successful and Snohomish escaped the inning with an unorthodox double-play.

“The sixth inning was a little bit on the wild side,” Hammons said.

Blake Simpson batted 2-for-3 with three RBI for Snohomish. Simpson had an RBI single in the third and followed that up with a two-run single in the fifth, scoring Brady Christian and Colton Responte.

Snohomish’s Garrett Dmochowsky had a two-run double in the third.

“It was an outstanding game, I was just happy to get a victory for these young guys,” Hammons said. “We learned from our mistakes well enough to eek out a 5-3 victory.”
